Cruise Damage

Ok, its been a little over a week since I have been back. 

My weight upon returning from my vacation was a net gain of 8 pounds.

I attribute a few pounds of that to water weight. 

Weighing in today I have a 5 pound loss.

All and all I did expect to gain.  I didn't over indulge but also allowed myself to have a few adult beverages and desserts every day, that I normally would not have in my everyday diet.

From this point on I will probably have between 1000 to 1200 calories a day of high protein - low carbs keeping the carbs under 20 grams and continuing my walking 3-4 times a week, but only weigh one time a week.

Today completed my 30 days with a total weight loss of 18 pounds.  I am very happy with my results, I can see the difference in the mirror and in my cloths.  I will continue to watch my carb intake while on vacation and exercise.  I'll be back with results after the cruise on July 11th.

Had  a very busy day, getting last minute shopping and other things necessary for the cruise done.  Even took back a pair of pants to Dillards that I bought about a month ago....  now to big on me!!!
Seeing results in the mirror and with how my cloths fit is such a good feeling and great motivator in resisting tempting foods. 

My grandson 3 1/2 was eating a candy bar and wanted to share half of it with me.  I told him thank you for wanting to share with me, and I  explained I couldn't eat it because I was dieting.  He told me "this is diet food, you can eat it".   So I asked...  "Are you sure?"  He replied very ardently, assuring me that it was acceptable.  So sweet!!   I made another suggestion, that we put it in a zip lock bag and in the fridge for him to eat later or the next day and he agreed.

No loss today but my cycle did finally start (10 days late).  Got an early morning walk in with my husband and a trip to Wal-mart (all before 8:30).   While there I picked up some ingredients for a low carb clam chowder and can't wait to make it in the next few days.  If it taste as good as it sounds, I'll be posting the recipe soon.


The countdown starts, 4 days left of my 30 days, and one week till the cruise.  I'm feeling like a kid on Christmas eve,  it's 3:52 AM, I've been up for just about an hour and can't go back to sleep!

Well I was pleasantly surprised when I got on the scale today, never expecting a 1.25 pound loss.  No walking again today but stayed very active in 100' weather cleaning my garage for 4 hours.  Water intake today no problem in this heat, and not eating also not a problem.  In this kind of heat you have no desire to eat.  As I enter my last week I am looking back and can't believe how fast it has gone.

My weight remains the same today and no cycle yet.  Knowing we had plans to go out to dinner with friends I only drank 1 AdvantEdge today.  At dinner I ordered the grilled tilapia corn tortilla knowing my carb intake would be more than I wanted, but I was able to stay under 30g.   I was happy with my water intake of 75 oz, drinking a lot of water is always a challenge for me.  Now I await the judgment of the scale tomorrow.

Ok girls.....  I'm feeling bloated and have been moody since last night.  I am eight days late for my period.  I am pre-menopausal so my periods have been fluctuating over the past year.  Some months its a few days late and some months is a week early.  My daughter and I also seem to cycle at the same time, and she was late this month too.  She is usually 3-4 days ahead of me, so I guess she is the dominant female at 12 years old (haha).  She started yesterday, and I can only hope my weight gain of 0.5 pounds is due to my cycle about to start too.  Really want this over with before my vacation!  If this is the case I suspect I could see an additional pound or two increase over the duration of my cycle, then the loss a day or two after completion.  I will continue to blog until Sunday July 3rd if my cycle makes it necessary.  I also plan on picking the blog back up on July 11th with my weight results after my cruise.

Strange schedule today, worked a night shift, and was to tired to walk at 7:30am and it was raining, something we haven't had here in East Texas for over a month.  My daughter (12 years old) told me today she can tell that I have lost weight.  It's great seeing the scale go down, but even greater when someone who sees you every day comments.

Today is Fathers day, for dinner  I had a salad with shredded cheese, my husband was treated to rib eye stake, snow crab legs, scallops, salad and roasted asparagus.  If you have never had them roasted its a must try!  Then a "Bopper" sunday from a custard place called Shakes.  I thought how good it would taste if I just took a bite, but I wasn't hungry and didn't have a sweet tooth.  Most of my food choices all my life have not been out of hunger or even out of that real craving for something sweet.   That sunday was loaded with sugar!   Three scoops of custard, drenched in hot fudge and caramel and topped with salted crunchy pecans.  That heap of sugar was my enemy, one bite and I would surly be out of ketosis!  I was able to sit right next to my husband while he ate this sweet treat and know that, this was not a food gone from my life forever, and for now nothing tastes as good as thin feels.

A swim suite I ordered came in the mail today, the bottoms look like workout shorts and cover my hips and half of my upper leg.   It's easy to see a difference in my body shape with this suite on.  One of the things I was looking least forward to on my cruise was putting on a swim suite.  Well no more!

3:30 this morning I was woken up when a police officer rang my doorbell.  He apologized  and thought I was awake because he saw lights on.  My 12 year old had just about every light in the house on and was asleep with the TV blaring.  Unable to go back to sleep I took the opportunity to get my walk in early, me and my two cans of spaghettio's.

I had increased urination today and results from the Miralax.   I realized the eggplant I ate the day before had been salted down by my husband before he cooked it and I must have been retaining water.

Well half way through and I feel great.  I tried on a new pair of pants I purchased 3 weeks ago for my up coming cruise and they are now to big!  It's so nice to see results, they aid in keeping me motivated.

I worked 12 hrs today and upon my arrival home was to tired to go walking.  I'm still trying to get more water in, but it is defiantly harder for me to drink than it is for me to abstain from food.  Today for my three oz of meat protein, I ate a salad with grilled chicken and used "WaldenFarms" Italian dressing.  I think the best part about this dressing is it's zero every thing (cabs, calories, fat) except flavor

Lastly I'm going to discuss bowl movements for the reader out there that might be doing a similar diet and is having the same problems.  I haven't had one in 4 days.  It doesn't concern me greatly because there isn't a lot of solid waist in my digestive track, but I have had roughage over the past few day and would like to be more regular.   So starting today I am adding miralax to my first 8oz's of water for the day.

At 8am it was 75' out with a pleasant  breeze,  excellent walking weather.  Once again I walked my 30 minuets with a can of spaghetti and meatballs in each hand rotating various exercises with them.  The rest of this day has been non stop running errands, cooking several meals for the week and cleaning.  Lots of calories burned!

My husband is also on a high protein low carb diet, so for dinner I made spaghetti sauce and meat balls.  He took an eggplant from the garden grilled it topped it with sauce and mozzarella and with it had  thin spaghetti noodles made from soy.  They were a very good substitute for the real thing and had zero carbs.   We found them in our local health food store in the refrigerated section for $1.30, they also come in linguine style.

Took my 30 min walk today at 9:00.  The temperature was already 87' but  there was a surprising light  breeze that made the walk tolerable.  Today I walked with two cans of Chef Boyardee Whole Grain spaghetti and meatballs 15 oz each (my grandsons favorite) and the heaviest cans I could find in my pantry.  I used them as hand weights and did multiple arm exercises with them, now I await the two day effect.

Later today I sat down with a family friend who is a registered nutritionist, and discussed my 30 day experiment.  I mainly wanted to talk about my protein, she agreed the 50g I am getting a day is adequate.  The only suggestion she had for me was to make part of my protein intake from 2-3 oz of meat a day.

Today is Sunday, and its been a productive one, even though I didn't get a walk in today.  Between house work, garden work and running after my grandson for a good part of the day I should be ok in the exercise department.

For extra natural vitamins and nutrients I made a vegetable broth, from carrots, onions, garlic, celery and from the garden rosemary, sweet basil, lemon grass, and kaffer lime leaves.  I also added 1 can of tomato past, dried oregano, bay leaves and a few red pepper flakes.  Even though I didn't add salt, I found it to be very tasty, my family on the other hand disagrees.  Do we disagree because I have abstained from table salt over the past 12 days and my taste buds have adjusted?  I have friends that smoke and pile salt on their food that's already salted in my opinion, they say they can't taste the salt.  Since smoking effects a persons taste buds, causing them to increase their sodium intake, it makes sense that most smokers wind up with hypertension.

Due to the vegetable broth my carb count today is an approximate.

One-third through my journey and I feel great. I notice a difference in my cloths, I can see it in the mirror, and people who don't know I'm dieting have commented. I am not ravenous hungry like I thought I might be, the brief periods of hunger I experience are satisfied with the AdvantEdge and water. I also noticed when I walked today, I wasn't thinking "how much longer till I'm done" and when my 30 min was up, I was quite surprised.

Last night I went out with my husband and a friend to Applebee's for a beer and water for me. I don't drink the stuff, never acquired the taste! I thought about getting something to eat, looked at the menu and then put it away. I was not hungry! Most the time I eat its not out of hunger, but appetite. When it is out of hunger it could be satisfied with less food, but I like the taste so I eat more. My journey is teaching me the difference between hunger and appetite, and giving me tools for my future.

Everyone seems to be freaked out over calories.  Here are some facts that are not being considered my body has plenty of adipose for fuel, my protein in take is close to or on target for what post bariatric patients are instructed to have.  I am lightly exercising a few times a week and my blood glucose is consistently 78-82 normal.  AdvantEDGE has nutrients and I am taking daily vitamin, I am also in ketosis, a sign that fat is being used and broken down for fuel.  (Please don't confuse Ketosis with Diabetic Ketosis). 

I also understand the the argument of slowing my metabolism, but that is not life threatening as some have expressed.  What I have noticed, some people are caring, some are rued, and some only want to give partial information, and none have given their credentials for their advice.

Lots of naysayers out there, and I appreciate the concern.  I have increased my protein and I am being monitored daily with B/P and Blood Glucose checks by nurses.  Will I lose lean muscle? Probably a small amount.  Will I die? most likely not.  Will my metabolism stop working? I doubt it.  Will I gain the weight back plus more?  If I were to eat more calories than my body burns (like most do after they get done with crash or regular diets) yes.

Let me start by introducing myself to you, my name is Catherine and I am 49 years old.  I have struggled with weight all my life. 

My weight problems started when I was about eight or nine years old, I remember going to Weightwatchers when I was 12 weighing 130 pounds, WW goal for me was to be 102 pounds.  At 16 years old I weighed 196 pounds and my family Dr (who I never liked) ask me if I was going to have party when I hit 200 pounds.  I was able to lose a few pounds by my 18th birthday weighing around 180.  I struggled dieting on and off and by time I was 21 years old I weighed 150 pounds.  But being 5'4" all the charts suggested I should weigh 130 pounds.

I remember felling fat still at 150 pounds, but was never able to get below that.  It's kind of ironic that now I would kill to be 150 pounds.  Even when  I look back at pictures of my self, back then I was not the fatty I saw in the mirror.

Fast forward  23 years and three kids later and I was at my heaviest weight ever!  Within that 23 years I had dieted on and off losing 50 pounds and gaining 60, losing 40 pounds and gaining 50, you know the yo-yo, until that heaviest weight at age 45 was 300 pounds.


I turned to lap-band surgery, and had grand expectations of being 150 pounds in a year.  My wight loss with the band was slow.   I had three fills within the first six months and was told that I was given the  largest band and that my 10cc band was already filled to 8cc leaving only 2cc to fill.  That first year I lost 30 pounds and felt like a failure.  The photo albums in the surgeons office were full of lap-band patents who had lost 100+ pounds in their first year.  Its been 4 years now and my weight loss is 71 pounds.   Still feeling like a failure I have never returned to my surgeons office.  

Last Wednesday June 1st I decided (motivated by an upcoming cruise) to see how much weight I could loose in 30 days on less than 500 calories day with a no carb/low carb diet.  I have done much research and know the recommendations for low calorie diets are for not less than 1000 calories a day let alone less than 500, I also know protein is important to maintain muscle mass.

That being said I am not recommending anything I am attempting, this blog is my experiment.

My plan is to start with a liquid diet.  I found "ESA AdvantEDGE" liquid with 17g protein and 110 calories in 11oz containers. (3-4 a day).   If necessary I will add green vegetables and protein (meat only) if feeling the urge to cheat.
